Why Day & Night Blinds are the Modern Standard.

Why Day & Night Blinds are the Modern Standard.

Dual Fabric Layers

Two layers of horizontal striped fabric (sheer and opaque) move independently to create stunning light effects.

Precision Privacy

Line up the opaque strips for full privacy, or overlap them with sheer strips to let the Glasgow sunshine in.

Vision Technology

Also known as Zebra blinds, our Vision range offers a modern, sleek look that replaces traditional net curtains.

Day & Night Blinds

Day and Night blinds are an innovative window covering that features two layers of striped fabric—one transparent (mesh) and one opaque (solid). As you operate the blind, these layers slide past each other. When the opaque strips overlap, they create a solid block of color for privacy and light control; when the opaque strips align with the mesh, they create a "zebra" effect that allows soft, filtered light into the room while still maintaining a level of daytime privacy.

Materials:

  • Typically made from 100% durable Polyester for the fabric strips and a delicate yet strong synthetic mesh for the transparent sections.

Design

  • A continuous loop of fabric that rolls around a bottom bar and hides inside a top cassette.

Casette/Headrail:

  • Usually comes with a sleek aluminum headbox (often available in white, black, or anthracite) that neatly conceals the roller mechanism.

Light Control

  • Translucent/Dim-out: Softens sunlight (most common).
  • Blackout: Blackout: Uses thicker opaque strips to block more light (though some light may still bleed through the mesh gaps).

Operation:

  • Available in manual (high-quality side chain) or motorized (remote-controlled or smart-home integrated) versions.
Day and Night blinds are relatively easy to maintain, but because of the delicate mesh sections, they require a gentle touch:
  • Routine Cleaning: Use a feather duster or a microfiber cloth once a week to prevent dust buildup.
  • Vacuuming: Use a vacuum with a soft brush attachment on the lowest suction setting. Be extremely careful not to "suck in" the mesh, as this can cause snagging or creasing.
  • Spot Cleaning: Spot Cleaning: For marks on the solid fabric, use a damp cloth with very mild soapy water. Do not rub the mesh sections, as they are fragile; instead, gently blot them if necessary.
  • Avoid Moisture: Do not soak the blinds or use harsh chemical sprays, as these can damage the adhesive bonds between the mesh and the fabric strips.
  • Living Rooms & Street-Facing Windows: These are the "best-use" scenarios. They allow you to enjoy natural light during the day while the "striped" position prevents passersby from seeing into your home.
  • Home Offices: Ideal for reducing screen glare. You can adjust the strips to block direct sunlight hitting your monitor while keeping the rest of the room bright.
  • Modern Interiors: Their clean lines and "cassette" finish make them perfect for contemporary, minimalist, or industrial-style homes.
  • Dining Areas: They provide a sophisticated, high-end look that mimics the functionality of expensive shutters at a fraction of the cost.
  • Note on Bedrooms: While excellent for privacy, they may not provide 100% total darkness (due to the small gaps between the two fabric layers), so they are best for bedrooms where "dim-out" is sufficient rather than total "pitch black."

Care and Cleaning Instruction

Because Velux blinds are often positioned horizontally or at an angle, they require specific attention to maintain smooth operation:
  • Frame Maintenance: Periodically wipe the side channels with a dry, lint-free cloth to remove any dust or debris that could cause the blind to "snag" or run unevenly.
  • Fabric Cleaning: Most skylight fabrics are treated with a dust-repellent coating. For light cleaning, use a vacuum upholstery tool on its lowest setting. For minor marks, a lightly dampened sponge is sufficient.
  • Tension Cord Care: Avoid leaving the blinds partially open for months at a time; fully opening and closing them occasionally helps maintain the tension in the internal cord system.
  • Lubrication: If the blind becomes stiff, a tiny amount of dry silicone spray on the side tracks will restore a smooth, gliding motion.

Ideal for:

  • For Loft Bedrooms: We highly recommend the Duo-Blind—a combination of a blackout blind and a pleated translucent blind—giving you total darkness for sleep and soft filtered light during the day.
  • For High Skylights: If your window is out of reach, Solar-Powered Motorisation is the smartest choice. It requires no wiring and uses a remote control to manage light without needing a ladder or pole.
  • The "Cool Attic" Solution: If your loft gets uncomfortably hot in the summer, opt for our Honeycomb-style Velux blinds. The dual-cell structure provides an extra layer of air insulation against the glass.

Care and Cleaning Procedures

Natural wood requires specific care to maintain its luster and structural integrity over time.
  • Routine Dusting: Use a soft, dry microfibre cloth or a specialized blind duster. Close the slats fully to wipe one side, then rotate them to clean the reverse.
  • Avoid Excess Water: Never saturate wooden blinds. If a damp cloth is needed for sticky marks, ensure it is well-wrung and follow up immediately with a dry cloth to prevent moisture absorption.
  • Furniture Polish: Occasionally, a small amount of non-silicone wood polish can be applied to a cloth to restore the natural shine of stained wood finishes.
  • Vacuuming: Use the soft brush attachment on your vacuum cleaner on a low-suction setting to remove dust from the cords and headrail.
  • UV Protection: Finished with a specialized UV-resistant coating to prevent fading or cracking from sun exposure.

Perfect Fit for Every Window

With Day and Night Blinds blinds, you get to control how much sunlight you let in. Slide them one way, and the sheer fabric strips let in light, making your room bright and cheerful. When the evening comes, switch the blinds to the solid fabric strips for complete privacy.

Our blinds are custom-made to fit your home perfectly. Whether you want something bold, subtle, or a particular look to match your current interior, we can guide you through a selection that will complement your space beautifully. With precise measurements and a variety of looks, you’ll find just what you need for that perfect look.

What Are Day & Night Blinds?

Day & Night blinds feature two layers of fabric with alternating transparent and opaque horizontal stripes. As you operate the blind, the layers slide past each other, allowing the stripes to overlap.
  • "Day" Mode: Align the transparent sections to let soft, filtered light into your home while maintaining an outward view.
  • "Night" Mode: Adjust the blind so the opaque stripes cover the transparent ones, creating a solid panel for total privacy and reduced light entry.
It is the perfect balance of a light-filtering voile and a solid roller blind, all in one sleek unit.

Day & Nights Blinds (FAQ)

Yes! They are an excellent, stylish choice for large doors. Because they are compact and operate on a smooth roller mechanism, they don’t take up much space, providing a clean look when retracted and full coverage when needed.

They are very low-maintenance. Because of the fabric construction, a light dust with a microfiber cloth or a soft brush attachment on your vacuum is usually all that is needed to keep them looking brand new.

Day & Night blinds are designed to offer a balance of light and privacy rather than 100% blackout. They are excellent for bedrooms where you want to wake up with natural light, but if you require total darkness for cinema rooms, we would recommend pairing them with our [Blackout Blind Screens™] or a dedicated blackout roller system.

"Day & Night blinds"—often referred to as Vision or Zebra blinds—are a contemporary window treatment designed for maximum versatility. They feature two layers of fabric with alternating transparent (voile) and opaque (solid) horizontal stripes. By operating the blind, the layers slide past one another, allowing you to overlap the strips to either let soft, filtered light in or create a solid panel for total privacy. They are essentially the perfect blend of a roller blind and a sheer curtain.

These blinds operate on a simple, smooth roller mechanism. As you pull the operating chain or use the wand, the dual-layer fabric moves up or down. Because the layers are linked, the stripes shift relative to each other. When the opaque stripes line up, they block the view and light; when they offset against the transparent stripes, they allow light and vision through. This gives you precise, fingertip control over your home’s light levels throughout the day.

Day & Night blinds are remarkably low-maintenance. For regular upkeep, a simple dust-down with a clean, dry microfiber cloth or a feather duster is usually sufficient. If you need a deeper clean, you can use a vacuum cleaner with a soft brush attachment on a very low suction setting to gently remove any dust from the fabric stripes. Avoid using harsh chemical cleaners or soaking the fabric in water, as this can damage the structural integrity and the finish of the material.

We strongly advise against attempting to cut these blinds yourself. Because Day & Night blinds rely on a precise, dual-layer alignment and a specialized headrail mechanism, any manual cutting can cause the fabric to fray, the stripes to become misaligned, or the mechanism to jam. At Cross Blinds & Shutters, we provide a professional made-to-measure service. We ensure your blinds are manufactured exactly to the dimensions of your window during production, guaranteeing a perfect fit and smooth operation that lasts for years.
