Why Choose Roman Blinds?

Add a touch of luxury with the sophisticated look of curtains and the space-saving convenience of a blind.

Soft Furnishing Aesthetic

The soft folds of a Roman blind create a layered, cozy feel that standard rollers simply can't match, providing a high-end "finished" look to any room.

Premium Lining Options

Choose from standard light-filtering, thermal-efficient, or 100% blackout linings to perfectly suit your bedroom or living space.

Hand-Finished Quality

Every Roman blind is hand-finished by expert tailors to ensure the patterns align perfectly and the stitching remains invisible from the front.

Roman Blinds

Roman blinds (or Roman shades) are a sophisticated hybrid between a traditional fabric curtain and a standard window blind. When lowered, they lay flat against the window like a smooth fabric panel; when raised, they gather into neat, horizontal accordion-style folds. This design offers a clean, uncluttered look that adds texture and warmth to a room without the bulk of heavy drapery. They are widely considered one of the most stylish window treatments due to the endless variety of fabric patterns and textures available.

Materials:

  • Available in a wide range of fabrics including Linen, Cotton, Polyester, Silk, and Velvet.

Styles

  • Flat Roman: A sleek, minimalist look where the fabric stays flat when lowered; best for showing off bold patterns.
  • Hobbled (Teardrop): Features soft folds even when the blind is fully lowered, creating a traditional, cascading look.
  • Front-Slatted: Includes horizontal batten rods sewn into the front to create structured, crisp folds.

Lining Options:

  • Unlined: Translucent; lets in natural light.
  • Privacy Lining: Filters light while ensuring people can’t see in.
  • Blackout Lining: Ideal for total light blockage and thermal insulation.

Controls:

  • Standard cord-and-cleat, cordless (child-safe), or motorized/remote-controlled.

Mounting:

  • Inside mount (fits within the window casing) or Outside mount (fixed to the wall or trim to cover the entire window).
Because Roman blinds are made of fabric, they require similar care to upholstery or curtains:
  • Weekly Maintenance: Use the soft brush attachment on your vacuum cleaner to gently remove dust and pet hair. Start at the top and work your way down, paying special attention to the folds where dust accumulates.
  • Spot Cleaning: For small stains, use a clean cloth dampened with lukewarm water and a drop of mild detergent. Blot (do not rub) the area to avoid pilling the fabric.
  • Steam Cleaning: A handheld steamer is excellent for removing wrinkles or refreshing the fabric without taking the blinds down.
  • Deep Cleaning: Most Roman blinds are dry clean only, especially those made of silk, linen, or wool. Do not put them in a washing machine, as the internal strings can tangle and the fabric may shrink or lose its shape.
  • Bedrooms: When paired with a blackout lining, Roman blinds are perfect for creating a dark, cozy sleeping environment while adding a soft, decorative touch.
  • Living & Dining Rooms: Use them to add a pop of color or a sophisticated pattern. They work beautifully in formal spaces where you want the elegance of a curtain but have limited wall space.
  • Small Windows: Unlike curtains, which can overwhelm a small room, Roman blinds fit neatly within the window frame, making the space feel larger and more organized.
  • Layering: They are ideal for "layering" under long drapery panels to provide a high-end, designer look with dual layers of light control.
  • Where to Avoid: Generally not recommended for high-moisture areas like bathrooms or directly over kitchen sinks, as the fabric can absorb steam, odors, and grease, leading to mildew or staining.

Care and Cleaning Instruction

Because Velux blinds are often positioned horizontally or at an angle, they require specific attention to maintain smooth operation:
  • Frame Maintenance: Periodically wipe the side channels with a dry, lint-free cloth to remove any dust or debris that could cause the blind to "snag" or run unevenly.
  • Fabric Cleaning: Most skylight fabrics are treated with a dust-repellent coating. For light cleaning, use a vacuum upholstery tool on its lowest setting. For minor marks, a lightly dampened sponge is sufficient.
  • Tension Cord Care: Avoid leaving the blinds partially open for months at a time; fully opening and closing them occasionally helps maintain the tension in the internal cord system.
  • Lubrication: If the blind becomes stiff, a tiny amount of dry silicone spray on the side tracks will restore a smooth, gliding motion.

Ideal for:

  • For Loft Bedrooms: We highly recommend the Duo-Blind—a combination of a blackout blind and a pleated translucent blind—giving you total darkness for sleep and soft filtered light during the day.
  • For High Skylights: If your window is out of reach, Solar-Powered Motorisation is the smartest choice. It requires no wiring and uses a remote control to manage light without needing a ladder or pole.
  • The "Cool Attic" Solution: If your loft gets uncomfortably hot in the summer, opt for our Honeycomb-style Velux blinds. The dual-cell structure provides an extra layer of air insulation against the glass.

Care and Cleaning Procedures

Natural wood requires specific care to maintain its luster and structural integrity over time.
  • Routine Dusting: Use a soft, dry microfibre cloth or a specialized blind duster. Close the slats fully to wipe one side, then rotate them to clean the reverse.
  • Avoid Excess Water: Never saturate wooden blinds. If a damp cloth is needed for sticky marks, ensure it is well-wrung and follow up immediately with a dry cloth to prevent moisture absorption.
  • Furniture Polish: Occasionally, a small amount of non-silicone wood polish can be applied to a cloth to restore the natural shine of stained wood finishes.
  • Vacuuming: Use the soft brush attachment on your vacuum cleaner on a low-suction setting to remove dust from the cords and headrail.
  • UV Protection: Finished with a specialized UV-resistant coating to prevent fading or cracking from sun exposure.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

A Roman blind is a classic, sophisticated window treatment that combines the functionality of a blind with the luxurious, soft feel of curtains. Unlike roller blinds that wrap around a tube, Roman blinds are made from fabric that folds into neat, horizontal pleats when raised. This structure creates a beautiful, layered look that adds warmth and texture to any room, making them a popular choice for homeowners who want to balance privacy, light control, and interior design style.

Accurate measurement is crucial to ensure your Roman blinds hang perfectly within your window frame. You first need to decide if you want the blind to sit inside the recess (for a neat, minimalist look) or outside the recess (to minimize light leakage).
  • Inside recess: Measure the width and drop in three different places, then use the smallest measurement to ensure it fits.
  • Outside recess: Add at least 5–10cm to the width and drop to ensure adequate coverage. Pro-tip: Don't stress about doing this yourself! During our free home survey, Ross will take precise, millimetre-perfect measurements, ensuring you don't have to worry about gaps or incorrect sizing.

Removing Roman blinds is a delicate task because of the internal cord system. First, fully lower the blind to its full drop. Locate the headrail—usually secured by small metal brackets at the top of the recess. You will need to release the locking mechanism (often a small lever or a hidden clip) while supporting the weight of the blind. Because Roman blinds use a complex system of cords and rings, it is very easy for them to tangle or get damaged during removal. If you are redecorating or moving, we recommend having a professional handle the removal to keep the mechanism intact.

The best way to maintain Roman blinds is regular, light care to prevent dust from settling into the fabric folds. Use a vacuum cleaner on a low suction setting with an upholstery brush attachment, working gently from top to bottom. For persistent spots, we recommend "spot cleaning" with a very lightly dampened, clean cloth—but be careful not to soak the fabric, as this can cause shrinkage or water marks. Important: Do not machine wash your Roman blinds. The combination of the rigid stiffening agents, the delicate lining, and the internal cords makes them unsuitable for a washing machine. If your blinds need a deep clean, it is best to consult a professional upholstery cleaner.
